Mike Hostler took up the pipes in 2004 at age 50 with the Cleveland Pipe Band without any prior musical training. Mike joined the Charleston Pipe Band when he moved here from Ohio in 2016.
Mike’s most memorable piping experiences have been the 8 times that he has played at Ground Zero in NYC and the annual 9/11 memorial observances. He has also played the pipes for Mets, Yankees, Giants, and Jets baseball games marching out to the sound of 50,000 screaming fans. Mike has also played at the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade (twice) with the Cleveland Police Department Pipe Band. Mike also enjoys playing the blues on harmonica and keyboard.
Mike Hostler was a street cop for 32 years in Cleveland, Ohio. He then earned his law degree at The University of Akron School of Law becoming an attorney in 2004 representing the Police Union. He is also a proud graduate of Kent State University.
Mike's inspiration to keep up his musical endeavors are the lyrics of the song “That’s Life” recorded by Frank Sinatra:
“And I know one thing.
Each time I find myself flat on my face.
I pick myself up and get
Back in the race.”
