Pipe Major Sandy Jones was the founding Pipe Major and Musical Director of the Charleston Pipe Band and held the title of Pipe Major Emeritus from his retirement in 2003 until his passing on March 5, 2023. As one of North America’s premier Pipe Majors, Sandy’s leadership, extraordinary talent and enthusiasm directly resulted in the creation of a thriving piping culture in our region. His tireless efforts and dedication to advancing the art of Great Highland Bagpipe performance has inspired players across generations. Those who have had the privilege of benefiting from Sandy’s instruction have often found great success in their musical endeavors. His mentorship has also left a legacy of pipers and drummers who have taken leadership roles within the various Scottish musical and cultural organizations throughout the country. A truly iconic figure in the piping world, Sandy's knowledge, humor, and counsel will be greatly missed in the piping world.
